BEAUTY IS IN THE HEART OF THE BEHOLDER

Why boudoir is mostly about inner beauty.

I never felt beautiful until I was an adult. And even then, I wasn’t comfortable with my weight. I met the father of my son when I was at my heaviest. He loved me for me and not what I looked like, but he loved that too. After my son was born, fitness became a large part of my priorities. I found appreciation for my body and what it could physically do. I was at a point where I was, finally, comfortable. He was not. I had been working so hard at something I thought would improve every single aspect of my life. Yet it was the beginning of so many … creative differences between the two of us.

I share this small part of me to make one point- You are loveable. No matter what phase of life you are in.
Boudoir photography has taught me a lot about inner beauty and the way others perceive me. It’s simple but, we are blinded by our own self-image. We are enlightened when we have the opportunity to look through another’s eyes. I would get images back I questioned why this certain photographer would pick to edit. My eyes half open or leaning in an unappealing way. I would get images that stop me in my tracks. Is that really me? That natural, strong, pretty mama? Her face is doing all the right things. Is this how people see me? Even if for just moments at a time?

I came to the realization that it is. Every version of myself is worth noticing, appreciating. Even if I don’t see myself as perfect all the time—even if I don’t feel worthy everyday—other people see me as perfectly imperfect, as beautiful, as worthy to love and be loved in return.

Yet we are not just moments in time, but the sum of all the tears, scars, accomplishments, failures, great hair days, and comfy couch-sit in my sweats- Saturdays. Everything adds up. Our negative experiences count towards the greater sum of US. It gives you texture, strength, charisma, deviation from the general norm.

This is beauty.

Not everything resonates with everyone, and that’s even more romantic.

I have lived my life wanting everyone to care about me, as I have always been ready to care about anyone else. But the truth is, not everyone will like you. It's impossible. With this obvious realization I have found comfort. I can treat myself as I would treat others. I can love myself as I love others. Yet, I don’t have to love myself every day to appreciate myself all the same. Allowing myself to be imperfect has made me perfectly happy.

I have found peace in body neutrality. Instead of having to see myself as 100 percent all the time, and my feelings being invalidated when I don’t, I allow myself to feel what I may about my body and be okay with it. My body takes care of me. My body is so much more than beautiful. It is offering a smile to a stranger that lightens their mood. It is being able to help my best friend move an entire apartment in a weekend, just her and me. Maybe that’s more valuable than brows being on fleek. Inner beauty seeps through your literal skin, filling any room with enough light to see what is truly there.

Next time you look at your reflection, what will you choose to see?

I am a researcher by nature. I gather information, mull it over, think about all the scenarios and possible outcomes before making a decision. In some way, this gave me a sense of control in my life. I could predict how things would go, and if they fell into another scenario, well, I had already thought about that and could figure it out when that moment came.
