WHY BLACK AND WHITE

WHY BLACK AND WHITE?

I will be honest. When I was starting to learn and explore photography, I thought that black and white photos were created by people who did not know how to take a good photograph. I almost never converted my images to monochrome. I even remember a situation when Pamela asked me for some black and white photos for our website because all the images I uploaded were in color… and I told her that I would rather not because I did not think any of my color-less images were any good.

So how is it possible that you are sitting here on our website right now and pretty much all our boudoir photographs are in fact black and white? There is no short answer to it and no magical event that made me change my life by 180 degrees. Love for monochrome was very slowly infecting me on a subconscious level for quite some time.

I started to notice that all of my favorite photographers shoot in black and white pretty much exclusively. Peter Lindbergh, Vincent Peters, Helmut Netwon, Szymon Brodziak – all of them create either only black and white photographs or the vast majority of their body of work is black and white. Then also with time, as I was learning more about light (to me the most important thing in photography right next to your subject), I started to notice that when there is no color the eye must focus on other things, such as emotions, lighting, and texture.

I naturally became less interested in color because I noticed that very often color was taking attention away from my subjects. My photography is all about the person in front of me and our relationship at that moment and space when we are creating the image together. Color became an obstruction on my way to capturing the person in front of me.

Especially in boudoir, I always completely focus on the woman that decided to trust me to take her photographs. I think that was the final step for me on my journey to rediscovery of my art. I want my images to show them that they are strong, beautiful, in control, and confident not because of colors or other things but purely because of themselves and what is inside of them.

My love for black and white images culminated recently with the legendary Leica. Couple of months ago I saw a photo of their brand-new monochrome camera and I fell in love with it at first sight. It is a monochrome camera, which means that it captures images only in black and white. This camera both inspires and actually teaches me something new every single day.

Peter Lindbergh described it in the best way possible, I do not think I could put it in words any better:

“Although humans see reality in colour, for me, black and white has always been connected to the image's deeper truth, to its most hidden meaning.” – P. Lindbergh

I sincerely hope, that when you look at my photographs, you see the amazing women as the pieces of art that they are – and not just “pretty” pictures.
