WHY I LOVE BOUDOIR

Boudoir transformed me. It will transform you, too...

A woman with a curly hair.
I had the idea of starting a boudoir photography business the month before I turned forty. Forty was a big deal for me, though I’m still not sure why. I mean, it’s entirely arbitrary that that number has any meaning. But it felt…older. Not old. But definitely not young anymore. It felt as though my youth went out for cigarettes and never came back. I did not see it coming…even though I knew it was coming for 39 years.

The year before, I had finished my bachelor’s degree (finally!) with a minor in entrepreneurship. I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up. Then I met Mateusz. A mutual friend had introduced us at a party and then that same mutual friend posted a photo session that she and Mateusz had done together. It was a gorgeous boudoir shoot! I could tell this guy was an artist with insane talent; so it was no surprise that when I reached out to him, he was already planning on starting a photography business. Mateusz wanted to shoot weddings, but I wanted to convince him to specialize in boudoir and partner with me.

Why boudoir? Boudoir photography has the unique characteristic of highlighting both our strength and vulnerability. It is a female-focused industry and I absolutely love the opportunity to create a vehicle for the empowerment of women. There’s something so brave about stripping down to your skivvies and allowing an artist to photograph you.

I haven’t met a single client who didn’t feel nervous about their shoot. It’s a little like doing your wedding day all over again, but in your underwear. But by the time our clients leave, they are changed people. All their fear flew out the window ten minutes into their shoot and now they are bold, daring, confident, intrepid!

When they come in for their image reveal two weeks later they get to relive the day all over again, but this time with the knowledge that they are brave, badass babes. This is my absolute favorite part of the job. There is usually a host of strong emotions when clients see their images for the first time, but I especially love it when they cry. “She can see it,” I think. “She can see who she truly is! She sees how beautiful she is!” Then we’re crying together and we’re BFFs because that’s how women do.

Everyone deserves to feel beautiful. EV-ER-Y-ONE. AND sexy…and worthy of being pampered. I feel passionately about changing the way we see ourselves, one woman at a time. I want to debunk the myth that we don’t deserve happiness because we’re not enough: thin enough, white enough, tan enough, blonde enough, young enough. We are enough! We all have stretchmarks and scars and cellulite and we all feel awkward in front of a camera. Those things do not define who we are. That’s what I’ve learned from boudoir. We are all beautiful, no matter our shape or size or age.

Mateusz’s images of me made me feel sexier at forty than I had ever felt before. They made me realize that sexy is about confidence and acceptance and knowing yourself! I want every woman to experience this! Let’s celebrate your unique beauty together. Let’s be awkward and cry together and become BFFs. Let’s learn to love ourselves exactly the way we are. You deserve to see yourself the way I see you! Let me show you how beautiful you truly are.

I am a researcher by nature. I gather information, mull it over, think about all the scenarios and possible outcomes before making a decision. In some way, this gave me a sense of control in my life. I could predict how things would go, and if they fell into another scenario, well, I had already thought about that and could figure it out when that moment came.

Boudoir photography has long been celebrated as a powerful way for individuals to embrace their sensuality, self-confidence, and beauty. While it’s often associated with women looking to create intimate gifts or celebrate milestones, boudoir photography is for everyone. For those with disabilities, participating in a boudoir shoot can offer even more profound, life-changing benefits. It can become an empowering act of self-love, a way to celebrate your body, and an opportunity to reclaim your sense of agency and confidence. If you’re living with a disability, whether visible or invisible, a boudoir photo shoot can help you see yourself in a new light and appreciate your body in ways you may not have considered before. Below are some of the many benefits of doing a boudoir photo shoot with a disability.
