A boudoir session is an amazing way to celebrate yourself. It is meant to showcase who you are – your personality, your passions, and all of the peculiar things that are unique to you. One way to incorporate this into your photos is through the use of props.

Boudoir is an opportunity to get photographs that are as unique as you. Every detail matters. You can begin with expressing your creativity through what you wear. Lingerie and clothing may not traditionally be thought of as props, but they can definitely be part of illustrating who you are as a person or possibilities you want to explore.

There are so many fun ways to personalize your pictures and add some of your own style. Many boudoir photographers offer accessories that you can use in your session. Basics such as body jewelry, adventurous lingerie, or a feather boa can create some playful and memorable photos. But what is even better is something that is unique to you.

Do you have a signature item that no one can picture you without? Maybe you are never seen without your coffee cup. Maybe you always wear bold glasses. Maybe you are known for your cowboy boots. Include them! This is your unique journey. While you want to look your best, you also want to be recognizable as you.
This is also a great opportunity to add accessories that give an idea of who you are as a person. If you are an athlete, include some sporting gear. A photographer? Show off your favorite vintage camera. A writer? Pose with paper and pen, or a typewriter. Musicians can pose with their instrument (guitars are particularly appealing in their mirroring of a woman’s curves) or a favorite vinyl. Include a record player to really increase the story told in your visual narrative. Artists can show off a piece or a representation of the medium they use.

Even small details can make a difference. If there is a piece of jewelry that you love, and wear every day, wear it in your session. If you wear hats, make sure at least one of your poses includes your favorite. Your favorite pair of heels, and maybe some seamed stockings or fishnets, will be amazingly sexy. If you are an avid reader, bring your favorite books. Your boudoir session will capture you and your interests at their most attractive. Talk to your photographer. See what options they offer, and ask them for ideas!

If you really want to embrace your individuality, go all out. If you are a huge nerd (I say that in an “I am too!” way), bring a light saber. Bring your gaming controller. Be totally and completely you. You are a super hot geek. Own it.

Are you covered in tattoos or have a few special pieces of art on your body? Choose lingerie or clothing that shows that off. Let your ink be your accessory. You can reveal them in a bare bones way with nothing else at all. Beautiful art is an enhancement all on its own.

Boudoir props can also allow you to explore what you think is beautiful and sexy. Gorgeous angel wings can eliminate the need for any other accessory. If you have an interest in kink, padded handcuffs and leather accessories will be seductive and sensual additions to your shoot. A lacy mask or an elaborate masquerade veil can be sexy and may allow you to feel a bit more free to explore. If part of your face is hidden, it isn’t just mysterious; it can offer you a buffer. Maybe you’ve always wanted to be a burlesque star. Use this opportunity to fulfill that fantasy. Or maybe you have had the dream of being Princess Leia in that iconic gold bikini. Do it. This is your session.

The point of a prop is to individualize your session – not to overpower it. Make sure it is something that you are comfortable with that will boost your confidence. Even if you are just a bit nervous and want some thing in your hand, which is understandable, it should add to your session rather than detracting from it.
You are the star. These are merely your accessories.
